Who’s behind the tools at HURST Jaws of Life®? It’s people like Trade Compliance Analyst, Deborah Allen. She’s worked in compliance for 30 years and she’s quick with a wry sense of humor.

“It’s interesting how I got into this line of work,” she said, laughing. “Nobody grows up saying they want to do this.” But she doesn’t laugh at the importance of what HURST does in Shelby, N.C.

“Lives depend on what we do — the people here are dedicated to making sure we put out a product that’s phenomenal,” she said.

What does a compliance analyst do? Deborah’s careful attention to detail is well suited to the rigors of imports/exports and making sure HURST, its suppliers, customers and end users operate within regulatory guidelines. She has seen regulations become stricter during her career, including tighter security guidelines since 9/11 that include screening customers for safety.

Deborah has her own set of tools that equip her for her role at HURST. She’s a licensed U.S. Customer Broker, Certified Customs Specialist (CCS), Certified US Export Compliance Officer (CUSECO) and is certified in Six Sigma Lean. Deborah is learning Spanish and German but says trade compliance is a language in and of itself.

With HURST tools spanning countries and continents including Canada, South America, Mexico, England and Indonesia, Deborah’s global experience is crucial. She began her career in consumer products at Tetley Tea, spent more than a decade at Genuine Parts Company/NAPA and started working in the world of serving first responders at North Carolina’s Scott Safety, all global companies.

As a HURST Jaws of life team member, Deborah joins a group of creators, innovators and industry pioneers. Her compliance analyst role #BehindTheTools is essential to keep things moving across the globe.

When asked about her role at the most trusted brand in the industry, “I can sum it up in one word,” she said. “Awesome.
