SAM inventor Jason Cerrano recently joined WCJB-TV in North Central Florida to discuss the compounding challenges facing fire departments as hurricane season follows an intense stretch of wildfire activity.
In the segment, Cerrano highlighted that while recent rain may ease drought conditions, the impact of months of dry weather and sustained wildfire response doesn’t disappear overnight. Departments enter hurricane season already stretched, with personnel fatigue, taxed equipment, and limited staffing creating added pressure.
“As hurricanes arrive, they may help relieve drought,” Cerrano noted, “but systems are already taxed. There’s a hangover effect from wildfire response, and recovery takes time.”
With one demanding season rolling into the next, fire crews must remain ready, balancing exhausted resources with the need to respond quickly to whatever comes next.
